Performance
You'd
be Better off Reading the Yellow Pages
Original
score written by Ben
Guttin.
The piece is a sociological response to America as a culture of
consumers. It becomes obvious as to what is important to us and
what is not, by using the yellow pages as reading material. From
beginning to the end, it unravels as a comprehensive analysis of
our surroundings. The action of reading to the audiences mirrors
children listening to a story being told. People become critics
of their own importance as they realize that the words have no story.
The reading is done in a very monotonous tone without any specific
feeling or emotion. Meanwhile, the words take over the storyteller
who rips out every page after reading the first word in it, slowly
the pages create a seemingly compulsive nest that takes over the
reader.
The performance takes about 45 minutes to an hour in which the spectator
can choose to come back and go as they wish. There is always the
surprise of coming back and observing the performance deeper in
the piles of ripped crumbled yellow pages.
