booklet In preparation for the tour, I asked members of the Chelsea community in New York to draw me maps of their favorite places in the neighborhood. These maps were then included in the self-guided tour booklet.
"Cities
are constructed out of the activities of countless parallel communities;
governmental, commercial, familial, residential, etc. At times these
communal avenues cross paths, others take years, even generations,
to intersect. Chelsea - though known for its galleries and art market,
bringing in for itself huge cash flow - is as varied an area as
many in Manhattan, with varying levels of economic and social distinction.
Sometimes this is hard to notice; one road rises higher than the
rest, leaving the others to form an underground highway system,
unseen, but supporting traffic of all sorts beneath its surface.
Without these varied avenues of action you'd find streets and buildings
devoid of nuance, leaving the area nothing but an empty shell, blood-drained
and lifeless. |
